EPS foam has been gaining popularity in surfboard shaping because it is superior to polyurethane foam relating to important issues of surfboard performance and environmental impact.

Performance:
EPS is 30 – 40 % lighter than polyurethane foam, and shines in what is
called “bouyant acceleration” which is experienced when turning an EPS surfboard.  Simply stated, EPS foam is lighter and less dense than Polyurethane foam and can accelerate  quicker to the water’s surface with the same amount of force applied, providing the surfer more speed and power.

Greenlight’s 2.0 lbf EPS foam is steam blown with small virgin beads,
with no recycled foam in the blank, which yields a very high quality
blank with uniform density throughout.

Environmental Impact:
Even better, EPS foam does not release Volatile  Organic Compounds (VOC) into the atmosphere when blown into blanks. Glassed with Epoxy Resin, (which is approximately five times the strength of polyester because of it’s molecular bonding) produces stronger boards that remain rideable for
many years, keeping surfboards out of landfills where most of them end up after a year or two of dedicated service.

Following our commitment to environmentally friendly manufacturing methods, all foam scrap is brought to a nearby EPS recycling center to be
re-used for consumer packaging, reprocessed into building materials to
replace wood, or turned into energy through incineration without giving
off toxic or environmentally damaging fumes.

A note about our rockers and foils:

We’ve designed our line of blanks with popular standard natural rockers
with bit of extra thickness to the deck side of the nose and tail to allow
more possibilities in float and performance characteristics.  This extra thickness also allows the shaper to change the  rocker without loss of volume.
